Big Dig Tour

The Big Dig is the most expensive public-works project in US history. It is the replacement of downtown Boston's elevated central artery (I-93) with a new 8-to-10 lane underground highway and a bridge and improving its connection with the airport. To learn more, visit www.bigdig.com

My friend Myra works for a Big Dig contracting company and let me come on a tour of the Big Dig. It rocked. I had read alot about it and really enjoyed the tour, seeing brand new empty roadways that will carry cars non-stop sometime in 2003.

This is a map I prepared to show my tour route and where the shots were taken. The letters A-F are locations notated on each picture. With Internet Explorer, if it seems blurry, click the bottom-right corner to see it full-size.

Keeper! The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge will be called "The Zakim Bridge" but it honors both Lenny Zakim, a Boston Civil Rights figure, and the Battle Bunker Hill (the Bunker Hill monument is reflected in the point at the top). It is the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world.

Between north and south lanes, these grids allow light to hit the river so fish dont think they're in a cave. The bars keep cars and people from falling.
